Pastoral care and safeguarding at Somerhill

Outstanding pastoral care

We approach the welfare of our pupils in a positive way, and all our staff reinforce the Somerhill philosophy and ethos. Somerhill children are happy, secure and look forward to coming to school each day.

Our children feel able to talk freely and openly to any staff member if they have any worries or problems of any kind. Staff respond appropriately to children, offering advice, support, guidance and reassurance. Somerhill shapes a pastoral support programme for individual children, where necessary, to manage their particular needs. We also have a trained school counsellor available to work with pupils during the school day.

All staff, from our Senior Leadership Team to class teachers, SENCOs, and non-teaching staff, are invested in the outstanding pastoral care at Somerhill.

Well-being and happiness

At Somerhill, we want our pupils to develop academically, but most of all we give them space to be themselves, enjoy their childhood and fulfil their individual potential. Our aim is to grow amazing people, and we support our pupils in being happy, confident and able to make a positive contribution to our school and the wider world.

With our outstanding grounds and sports facilities, there are plenty of opportunities for children at Somerhill to develop their physical health, but mental health and self-esteem are just as important and looking out for one another is promoted in school. We have a buddy system where older pupils guide and advise younger ones, and all our pupils have a strong bond with their class and form teachers. Our school counsellor also works weekly with pupils who have particular pastoral care needs. All this means there is always someone to talk to.

Our pastoral care is further supported by the addition of our Mindfulness Gazebo in 2024. This is a safe space within the Somerhill estate where pupils and staff can read, relax and take time out to be mindful and thoughtful throughout the day.

Safeguarding at Somerhill

Safeguarding is taken very seriously at Somerhill to ensure all pupils and staff are as safe as possible in and out of school.

We are a community, and all those directly connected (staff, governors, volunteers, parents, families and pupils) have an essential role to play in making it safe and secure. All staff are trained regularly and kept up to date with current information and legislation. We encourage pupils and staff to report any safeguarding concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and/or deputies as quickly as possible so that we can deal with concerns in the appropriate way. Somerhill recognises the importance of providing an ethos and environment within school that will help children to be safe and feel safe.
