Somerhill is exceptionally fortunate to have 2 libraries with a full time dedicated librarian. This enables new resources to be made available to the pupils on a continual basis, supporting the curriculum and the all-important reading for pleasure. We really do believe in developing our reading brains and there is a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction material to choose from.
All the Prep classes have a library session at least once a fortnight but may access the library at break times too. All the Pre-Prep classes have a library session at least once a week and when accompanied the children may access the library at break times too. In the sessions the pupils: talk about books, are read to and have access to a wide range of books that hopefully suit the most reluctant to the most avid of readers.
The library catalogue is on the web and pupils can also access it from home. They can view the books, review, reserve, make wish lists and create a bespoke interest feed. On the home page there are quick lists for: year group recommendations; project support; inclusivity and diversity, LGBTQ and BAME. There are links to, Audible, Book Trust, Dyslexia friendly sites and basically anything that the school is participating in, such as The Awesome Book Awards and Bookbuzz.
It’s a dynamic department taking part in book days and book fairs and is well supported by the Somerhill community.
