Harvest Festival
4th October 2017

Somerhill Pre-Prep, Derwent Lodge and Yardley Court celebrated their Harvest Festival this morning in an assembly that began with reflections on how it must feel to go hungry and how blessed we all are to have food and warmth. They thought about how they could look out for vulnerable friends in their community and support others, upholding Mahatma Gandhi’s teaching that “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members”. Pre-Prep sang a rousing “Thank You” followed by a fast (and brave) tasting quiz. Well done Mrs Bingham, Mr Murray, Annabelle and Marcus, ably assisted by Walter, Erin, Nancy and Sidney with their tasting spoons. There were some fairly wild guesses on the country of origin for blueberries, grapes, clementines and papaya!

This year, for the third year running, Somerhill is supporting Nourish. The charity was set up in response to the increasing numbers of low income working households and those individuals and families hit by welfare benefit cuts or unemployment in Tunbridge Wells. They have now expanded to cover South Tonbridge. Nourish provide short-term support in a crisis. They also help guide families to find longer-term support and advice and help people acquire skills, including cooking, budgeting and dietary skills, as well as employment & training advice.  Thank you to everyone at Somerhill for your generous donations.
