Reception, Years One and Two

Reception is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.  Children are now full time pupils who start to attend school assemblies, have lunch in the dining room and sometimes join with the older children to enjoy theatre and author visits. Although learning is still planned through play and practical activities, there is a greater emphasis on literacy and mathematical development.

During the Reception year, children continue to access our inside and outside learning environments. The curriculum is delivered through a variety of topics, including looking at old toys and the children’s own family trees to foster a sense of history. They will study habitats and use our grounds to take part in pond-dipping and bug hunting. The children look at the geography of Somerhill and go on visits to explore our local environment.

Year One and Year Two are collectively known as Key Stage One.  In Years One and Two, there is a daily focus on English and Mathematics.  Cross-curricular planning creates the opportunity for children to learn through a series of topics that have a Science, History or Geography focus. Lessons are not limited to classrooms and teachers view the grounds as another space, bursting with resources and possibilities to encourage children to develop their knowledge and understanding. To enrich the curriculum further, pupils either visit a specific place associated with a topic or visiting speakers are invited into school.

Alongside the academic curriculum, there are regular events at Somerhill Pre-Prep that are hugely enjoyable for all. Our children organise and present assemblies for the Pre-Prep pupils and invite their parents in to watch. The children enjoy participating in the annual SPP Poetry Competition. Book Week involves famous authors or illustrators running workshops with the children. Staff and children dress up as story characters and all the activities are connected to books. Our beautiful grounds are used year-round for walks and outdoor learning. Performing is developed in our Christmas plays and concerts, assemblies and Year Two finish their time at Pre-Prep with a show-stopping Leavers’ Performance.  From Year Two, children who learn an instrument are invited to play at the Junior Soiree.

In Reception, Year One and Year Two, each class has a qualified teacher and a teaching assistant ensuring a good staff to pupil ratio. There are specialist teachers for Music, Swimming and PE and they work closely with the class teacher to plan lessons and share the pupils’ progress. Conversational French is introduced in Year Two.

Reception, Year One and Year Two children visit the Art Rooms for a term. The children all receive a sketchbook and gradually learn how to develop a wide variety of art skills and how to organise a project. The projects are all linked to classroom topics and are designed to encourage all age groups to feel a great sense of achievement whilst developing new skills. Whether printing, collaging, painting, drawing or working with clay, each child experiences a sense of fun whilst exploring and discovering new talents.

We have a diverse and active Physical Education programme taught in the Bickmore Hall, sports fields and on the large Astro pitch.

All Reception, Year One and Year Two children receive swimming lessons once a week.
